Interviewing Skills for Threat Assessment

Interviewing Skills for Threat Assessment training leads various stakeholders through an in-depth training regarding the skills necessary to facilitate a successful threat assessment interview. Objectives of the training include: identifying the components of effective interviewing; learning the OARS technique of interviewing; how to address difficult topics; avoiding common barriers; how to peacefully resolve situations and provide support; adapting techniques to different situations/people.


Referrals to Threat Assessment Teams

Referrals to Threat Assessment Teams is a training for all staff in a school/district with a pre-existing, trained Threat Assessment Team.  Topics discussed in this training include key findings of the United States Secret Service Safe Schools Initiative, the pathway to violence, behaviors and circumstances of concern shown by previous school attackers, types of threats expressed by these attackers and how/when attendees should make reports to their school’s Threat Assessment team.  This training can be provided virtually or in person as needed.  


Team Training on the Colorado Threat Assessment & Management Protocol 

This comprehensive training is for the school/districts Threat Assessment Team, a group of multi-disciplinary personnel who will be tasked with identifying, understanding and managing concerning behaviors/threats made by students within the school/districts control.  Members of this team typically include administrators, mental health professionals and law enforcement/security.  Attendees will learn and discuss issues ranging from the research of the United States Secret Service on commonalities between school attackers to information sharing and common protocols.  Attendees will spend time in scenario-based learning to aid them in their assessment of and management of students who have exhibited concerning/threatening behaviors.  Upon completion of this training school/districts will gain access to and be able to utilize the Colorado Threat Assessment and Management Protocol and/or the accompanying virtual platform.
 

Threat Assessment in Schools: Best Practices Overview

A well-trained threat assessment team--administrator, mental health professional and law enforcement professional--is a vital part of a comprehensive safe schools’ violence prevention program. This is a six-hour training that includes the rationale behind threat assessment, the research of the U.S. Secret Service and procedures for conducting a TA at a school. A best practice protocol can be provided for districts that do not have currently have a protocol. Time is also devoted to scenario discussions. The training is provided by the CSSRC’s team of experienced trainers who are also available to review the district’s protocol.
