Integrated Emergency Preparedness Training for Schools
The Center for Health, Work & Environment at the CU Anschuz School of Public Health has developed a new training program based on extensive research into school emergency preparedness. Their findings revealed a significant gap: school emergency plans are often created at the district level with minimal input from teachers and staff. As a result, many school personnel feel unprepared, anxious, and uncertain about the plans, which leads to disengagement during emergency drills and a lack of confidence in their ability to respond effectively when needed.
This comprehensive training is designed to address these challenges by empowering school staff to take an active role in emergency preparedness and contains 4 modules that can be broken into multiple time frames to meet the school/district's needs. The program fosters leadership, builds confidence, and provides the tools and knowledge needed to ensure that drills and safety measures are both practical and impactful.
Training Goals:
- Equip teachers and staff with the information and resources they need to feel confident in responding to emergencies.
- Enhance knowledge and confidence in preparing for and responding to emergencies.
- Cultivate a sense of leadership and active participation in safety protocols.
- Encourage collaboration and peer support to create a more unified, resilient school community.
By integrating staff input and leadership into the emergency preparedness process, this training aims to transform how school communities engage with safety practices—ensuring everyone is not only informed but ready to take action when it counts.
Reunification: Down the Road to Recovery
This staff training focuses on building effective Reunification teams. Participants will explore critical decision-making, define team member roles, and practice emergency communication. Workshops will develop planning frameworks, cover site setup considerations, site selection criteria, accountability documents and necessary resource identification. Optional Table Top drills will provide practical application and experience in Reunification procedures.
Table Top Drills
School staff select training: Option 1. a trainer-led Table Top drill, focusing on an emergency action like evacuation or lockdown, to test and refine existing school emergency plans through a structured debrief. Option 2. Comprehensive training on developing and conducting in-house Table Top exercises. This includes understanding exercise objectives, crafting realistic narratives with injects, effective setup and facilitation techniques, and conducting thorough post-drill debriefings to enhance school preparedness. This empowers staff to create tailored exercises for their specific needs, ensuring ongoing plan evaluation and improvement.
